Achievements
a. Chemical Pathology Section:
  • Clinical Chemistry continues to be one of the most rapidly advancing areas of laboratory medicine. New technologies and analytical techniques by Real Time PCR, automated hormone analyzer, automated clinical chemistry analyzer and ISE instrument have a dramatic impact on the practice of clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine. These advanced technologies have changed the way we practice clinical laboratory science. Molecular diagnostic testing is allowing earlier detection and tailored treatment options based on genetic makeup. Testing techniques have shifted from test tubes, beakers to automation that allows reduced sample size, fewer reagents and more authentic results in short time. This department of Pathology is well equipped and has educated trained clinical laboratory professionals. The facilities provided here are not only beneficial for the patients and clinicians but also for the students to postgraduate clinical chemistry, Medical laboratory technology and researchers too.
b. Hematology and Blood Transfusion Section:
  • In this developing era of medical science conventional and advanced haematology is contributing a great impact with respect to the diagnosis and management of malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders. In this context the application of immunological, cytogenetics and molecular diagnostic methods has revolutionized the treatment protocol. Besides the conventional diagnostic instrument, automated haematology analyzer, coagulometer, other platelet aggrego meter, Hb Electropherosis with Denisto meter innovative analytic equipments such as flow cytometer, Tass Plus image analyzer, and immunocytochemical techniques has moved this field into advanced scientific diagnostic applications. The Blood Bank of this institute is under the supervision of classified Hematologist with facilities of preparation of blood components and their therapeutic application with respect to different haematological conditions. The section is fulfilling all the requirements for Postgraduate Training to produce skilled and competent Hematologists. In this context, the department of Haematology is being accorded full accreditation by CPSP for FCPS Part-II Training in Haematology in 2011 and at present has 02 Postgraduate FCPS Part-II Trainee in Haematology and Transfusion medicine. Regular case presentation, group discussion and interactive physician forum meetings are held under the guidance and supervision of Haematologist to enhance the subjective and objective cognitive and psychomotor skill amongst the Post graduate Trainee. The department is moving forward to establish institute of Haematology envisaged by the Principal Professor Dr. Muhammad Saeed.
c. Microbiology & Serology Section:
  • Almost all types of routine cultures of bacteria are being performed including blood culture and sensitivity testing. As for as serological testing is concerned, all serological work including Dengue fever are available. National Program for control of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C is also working under the section. HIV/AIDS surveillance centre of District Rahim Yar Khan is also functional since 1999. PCR facility for HBV DNA; HCV RNA and HCV genotyping is also available. Five 4th Year Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) B. Sc. (Hons) students have opted Microbiology & Immunology as elective subject and they are doing there research work in the section under the supervision of Dr. Abdul Hakeem, Section Incharge.
A new project of Multi Drug Resident cases of Tuberculosis on a new and latest instrument “Gene Expert” has also been launched in this section of Pathology Department
d. Histopathology & Cytopathology Section:
  • Was founded in 22-07-2005 at Sheikh Zayed Medical College Rahim Yar Khan. It was headed by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ikram Hashmi till 21-07-2008. From 22-07-2008 to 07-01-2013,Dr. Muhammad Suleman Khan, Assistant Professor was the only Histopathologist and incharge of the section, Dr. Rakhshanda Bajawa Professor of Histopathology is the Incharge of this section w.e.f.08-01-2013 Dr. Shahzad Shafqat Qureshi joined as Professor of Histopathology w.e.f. 14-01-2013. This section is working at its best to help the clinician in diagnosis of various diseases. Section has a well equipped laboratory and a diverse Pathology Museum. Recognition for post graduate FCPS-II Training in Histopathology is under process.
Our Pathology Museum contains 300 different gross specimens which is an assorted collection. All these facilities are enormously helpful for training of under and Postgraduate students. Our Histopathology Lab. is equipped with modern apparatus which included Automatic tissue processor, Automatic tissue stainer, Microtome, Knife sharpener, etc. Here utmost care is taken from the first step of sampling and preservation to the final stage of reporting.
All types of biopsy specimens are being reported in this section in addition cytological examination of fluid & FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration) is being performed here. We have plenty of specimens and slides for demonstration to students of 3rd Year and 4th Year MBBS for practical purposes. Students of 2nd Year B. Sc (Hons) Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) have been trained in Histopathology / Cytopathology, with good results in University examination.
Departmental Library:
  • A departmental library with adequate number of essential books and periodicals/journals are kept in it for the help and benefit of teaching staff. This helps the teachers to abreast them with the rapid intervention on the subject and attaining a grip and confidence in their respective field..
