Center For Thalassemia Care (CTC)

History

Establishment of a Blood Bank as well as Thalassemia Center at Sheikh Zayed Hospital/Medical College Rahim Yar Khan was a dream of Prof Dr. Muhammad Saeed (Principal Sh.Zayed Hospital/Medical College Rahim Yar Khan). The dream took the reality when Blood Bank P.P.Block was inaugurated on 12th April, 2 010. Dr. Qaiser Hasnain (Assc. Prof. of Haematology) was the founder of this practically existing fully equipped, blood component based Banking and was the man behind the gun, providing transfusion Medicine facility. His commitment , knowledge and experience put forth best results , both in the form of specified equipments as well as the appointment, training of skillful and hardworking technical staff .The facility gained trust among the clinicians soon and the same faith is guaranteed to date. It currently provides most of the blood components i.e. Red Cell Concenterate, Leucodepleted Plasma, Washed RBCs, Buffy Coat, Platelets (pooled and single donor) and FFP etc.

On arrival of Dr. Atifa Shuaib, Professor of Clinical Haematology in 2012, she took initiative to establish a Thalassemia Center adjascent to Blood Bank Haematology in P.P.Block. This fulfilled the remaining part of the dream of Principal Pof. Muhammad Saeed.

Dr. Muhammad Bilal Ghafoor, Haematologist (Focal Person) and Dr. Abdul Rauf Leghari, Assistant Professor (coordinator) were given the responsibility for completion of the goal to make a Thalassemia Center of a high profile National Standards. Their passionate struggle and relentless efforts with their working team of Blood Bank under supervision of Prof. Dr. Atifa Shuaib (Prof. of Haematology) and Prof. Hamayun Iqbal (Prof. of Paediatrics) made possible to inaugurate “Center For Thalassemia Care (CTC)” on 9th May 2014. The day and night gallant efforts of Dr. Muhammad Bilal Ghafoor were acknowledged and he was awarded by a “Letter Of Appreciation“. The contribution of Dr. Muhammad Saleem Leghari (Assc. Prof. Paediatrics) in establishment of CTC are also commendable and worth remembering.

Prof. Atifa Shuaib and Prof. Hamayun Iqbal were the first Co Chairpersons of “Center For Thalassemia Care (CTC)”. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Leghari (Paeditrics ) and Dr. Muhammad Bilal Ghafoor (Haematology & Transfusion Medicine) were nominated as Focal Persons for CTC.

Dr. Muhammad Saleem Leghari (Assc. Prof. Paediatrics) and Dr. Muhammad Bilal Ghafoor (Haematologist) have always been attached and concerned for poor and needy thalassemic patients. Worth mentioning is Miss Shamraiza Zulfiqar who is working as supervisor of Blood Bank P.P.Block, which is fulfilling the requirement of blood & blood components not only for the clinical departments of the hospital but also for CTC.
