Establishment:

The department of Psychiatry started functioning in 1988 as a full unit comprising of 20 beaded indoor and out door departments with the facility of ECT. At that time it was purely a clinical department which was the part of DHQ Hospital Rahim Yar Khan (the largest DHQ Hospital of the country). In 2003 the department was given the status of an academic department of Psychiatry after the start of Sheikh Zayed Medical College in Rahim Yar Khan. In 2005 the subject of Behavioural sciences was added to the curriculum of MBBS and the responsibility of its teaching was given to the department of Psychiatry. From then onward the name of department is changed to “The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Sciences” and it is serving as basic sciences as well as an academic clinical department.

Since 1988 till the arrival of teaching faculty the department was headed by Dr. Nayyar Nadeem Ahmed, Dr. Khadija Masood, Dr. Niaz Maqsood and Dr. Muhammad Akhtar for different tenures.

Date of Recognition with PMDC and CPSP:

Department of Psychiatry fully accredited for training of FCPS & MCPS (Psychiatry) on 24th April 2010

In May 2007 department of Psychiatry was recognition by PMDC

Facilities:

The department of psychiatry is a single unit under one roof. We have 22 beds (11 female and 11 male). We also have an EEG room where we do EEG tests for indoor and outdoor referred cases. There is a psychometric lab in which various psychological tests are performed (like PANSS, MMPI, TAT, BGT, HFD, BDI, WAT, EPPS, RISB, RSPM). We do ECT in collaboration with anaesthesia department and emergency operation theatre. We also manage cases of drug addiction within limited resources. All general laboratory tests, CT scan and MRI are done in liaison with hospital labs. We provide 24 hours emergency services for the patients of Psychiatry. one doctor is always present in ward We have liaison with department of medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynea & obs and all other departments of hospital. We also provide facilities of forensic psychiatry under the collaboration of District Police, Jail and judiciary. We run OPD for 6 days per week.

Academic Achievements:

The training & supervision of Postgraduate Trainees are monitored & assessed through the system of modules as laid down by CPSP

  • The supervision to the Postgraduate Trainees is providing especially emphasizing on history assessment, collaborative management plan, introduction of multidisciplinary review meetings, arrangements made in order to provide them the Maudsley guidelines & BNF, encouraged the trainees to study international & national journals, the clinical & interviewing skills, personality development.
  • The new structured Mental Health Assessment Proforma prepared under the guidance of worthy Brig Mowadat Hussain Rana & introduced for Postgraduate trainees in order to improve their quality training & assessment.
  • The new structured Cardex & Discharge Plan introduced after passing through collaborative management plan, i.e., medication regimen, PRN & stat medications, detoxification protocol & the protocol for Depot medications.
  • Postgraduate Trainees (FCPS. MCPS) are enrolled and is about to appear in their exams.
  • The Postgraduate Trainees from the General Medicine & the Allied join the department on mandatory rotation as per CPSP curricula.
  • The Trainees of Psychology are trained under the supervision of a Supervisor. All their academic and clinical activities are supervised by the Incharge Clinical Psychologist. Their training are assessed by giving the formal point system based on feedback (formal/informal), their clinical notes/writing, the history taking, the knowledge of applied/clinical Psychology, their art of rapport establishment, communication skills.

TRAINING’S/ INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS:

  • Many batches of MSc psychology students have completed their internship in the department of Psychiatry under the supervision Professor Dr. Aftab Asif.
  • Mini workshops about psychiatric disorders and drug addiction with doctors of other departments and periphery held on different occasions.

TEACHING ROUNDS:

  • For academic enhancement, the ward is divided into three batches headed by the Consultant, Psychiatrist. Each batch comprises of Consultant, PGs/Medical officers, Clinical Psychologists, Trainees of Psychology & Psychiatric Nurses.
  • The Special Attention Cases deal each day in ‘Multidiscplinary Review Meeting’ headed by the Consultant Psychiatrist.
  • The ward rounds are held every day under the supervision of Consultant

TEACHING SCHEDULE FOR PGRS, MOS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS:

  • The monthly teaching activity recently started through ‘Video Link in collaboration with CPSP’ under the supervision of worthy Brig Mowadat Hussain Rana
  • Two hours are assigned weekly for the Postgraduate trainees by the Assistant Professor
  • One case presentation weekly
  • One Journal club meeting weekly.
  • Clinico-pathological-conference once in fortnight

FUTURE PLANS:

  • Sending the Postgraduate Trainees for exposure & learning to under the supervision of Dean Psychiatry CPSP & legend, Brig Mowadat Hussain Rana,
  • State of the art establishment of the Department of Psychiatry which is the need of the day as Rahim Yar Khan is in Southern Punjab & is the only medical teaching institution for the people of Sindh till Nawabshah and for the people of Balochistan till Dera Bugti.
  • State of the art establishment of Drug addiction & rehabilitation unit
  • Establishment of Community Psychiatry Team with the collaboration of Dr Khadija Masood, Assistant Professor & first HOD, Department of Psychiatry, Sheikh Zayed Medical College/Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan
  • Establishment of the Research Centre within the department. Currently, one international study started on ‘Genetics in Schizophrenia’ with the collaboration of Dr Muhammad Ayub (Consultant Psychiatrist, United Kingdom) & Dr Farooq Naeem (Consultant Psychiatrist, Southampton University, United Kingdom). Second study started on ‘Bullying among the medical students by their teachers’ with the collaboration of Psychologists & Postgraduate trainees.
  • Establishment of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy clinic for the patients
  • Establishment & provide training for councillors, family therapists, support groups, couple therapists
  • Improving informational care about psychiatric disorders in general public through leaflets, the media and through seminars & walks ACADEMIC

  • Currently, the Psychiatry & Behavioural Sciences teaching is giving to the medical students & the allied health sciences students under the criteria laid down by UHS
  • In this session (2010-2011) lectures of psychiatry subject was delivered to 4th year MBBS class.
